Anti-Virus: Free vs Paid
by Rohit on Apr.21, 2009, under Computer Repair
There has always been a war between opensource freeware and paid software. One area that I feel freeware wins out is in the anti-virus market. For one, the big anti-virus companies have made it so that you have to buy their software every year, like a subscription. Imagine you have been paying for anti-virus for the past 5 years. You have spent over $250!! That’s a new iPod! I will be comparing Symantec (recently bought Norton) and AVG. More after the jump
Defragmenting: The second coming
by Rohit on Apr.20, 2009, under Computer Repair
When you run Defraggler, it can’t move files that are in use, mainly your page file and your registry. Page file is used when your computer runs out of memory. It is reserved space on the hard drive for “slow” memory. In comparison, your memory is much much faster to read and write to than your page file is. One thing that helps the page file be as fast as it can is to keep it sequential. The same goes for the registry. Read more after the jump
Uninstall and startup
by Rohit on Apr.20, 2009, under Computer Repair
When you get a lot of useless programs on your computer, it takes a toll on your boot times and could take up precious disk space. To remedy this its time to return to CCleaner. It has two very useful tools that I didn’t go over before. The first is an uninstall utility that trumps Window’s built in utility. The other is a very nice start up configuration utility that lets you stop unimportant programs from starting when you turn on your computer. More after the jump.
Dust, the secret computer killer
by Rohit on Apr.19, 2009, under Computer Repair
Dust is one of the biggest reasons a computer can’t preform at its best. A computer generates a lot of heat, especially the processor. When the processor reaches a certain temperature, the computer will shut itself down. I’ve seen computers that can’t stay on for more than 30 seconds before the heat is too much. The culprit is all of the dust built up inside the computer. Dust’s number one enemy? Compressed Air. More after the jump.
Defragmenting
by Rohit on Apr.19, 2009, under Computer Repair
Defragmenting. What exactly is it? Well whenever you download a new file, move files around, or make a copies with your files, they will not get written sequentially. They will be fragmented into pieces and written to the disk wherever there is room. After a while, this makes looking for files slower because it has to search through the entire hard drive for the pieces of the file. Defragging the hard drive will try to put all the files into a sequential order and make read speeds up to 20% faster! More after the jump.

by Rohit on Apr.18, 2009, under Computer Repair
There will be times when you have too much garbage on your computer, believe me I know the feeling. Even with 160 GB’s of storage, i’m constanly looking for stuff to delete. That’s where CCleaner (download here) comes in handy. Its got loads of presets of where too look to make some room on those harddrives. It cleans out your browser history, recent documents, temp files, and even emptys your recylce bin. Its the all-in-one cleaning utility for a PC. More after the jump.
